A sponsor licence is permission granted by the UK Home Office to an employer, allowing them to hire workers from outside the UK on certain visa routes. Organisations must meet strict compliance requirements to hold and maintain their licence.

The most common route is the Skilled Worker visa, which replaced the former Tier 2 (General) visa. Other routes include Global Business Mobility for multinational staff transfers, Seasonal Worker, and Creative Worker visas.
Sponsors are rated A or B. An A rating means the organisation has passed all compliance checks. A B rating means the sponsor has breached duties and is on an action plan. Only A-rated sponsors can assign new certificates of sponsorship.
A licence is held per visa route, so an employer licensed for three routes holds three entries on the register. That is why the register lists more entries than organisations.
A visa sponsorship licence holder does not necessarily sponsor visas, for various reasons such as cost. However, knowing the company you are applying to holds the licence is a good starting point.
