If you’re applying for a UK Skilled Worker visa, you’ve probably come across terms like SOC code and salary going rate. Understanding both is essential before accepting a job offer.

What is a SOC code?

A Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) code is a unique code that identifies your job occupation.

Each eligible Skilled Worker occupation has its own SOC code, which describes:

  • The type of work you’ll be doing
  • Whether the role is eligible for sponsorship
  • The salary requirements that apply

Your employer will assign the SOC code that best matches your role when issuing your Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS).

What is the Salary Going Rate?

The going rate is the typical salary set for a particular occupation under the Skilled Worker route.

Your employer will normally need to pay the higher of either the:

✅ Minimum salary threshold for the Skilled Worker visa, which is £41,700, Or

✅ Going rate for your occupation (unless you qualify for a permitted salary discount, such as a new entrant or an eligible PhD holder).

Meeting this requirement is an important part of a successful Skilled Worker visa application.

Why does this matter?

Choosing the wrong SOC code or misunderstanding the salary requirements could lead to problems with your visa application.

Before accepting a job offer, it’s worth checking:

✔️ Your SOC code

✔️ The going rate for your occupation

✔️ Whether you’re eligible for any salary discounts

Understanding these can help you make informed decisions and avoid common mistakes during the sponsorship process.
