There’s a common belief that completing lots of online courses or collecting certificates automatically improves employability. While learning is always valuable, doing random courses without a clear direction doesn’t always translate into better job prospects.

Many online certificates aren’t recognised by employers, particularly when they come from unaccredited providers or cover very broad topics. Listing ten short courses on a CV may show enthusiasm, but it doesn’t always demonstrate capability in a way hiring managers can evaluate.

For example:

• A generic “digital marketing” certificate without hands-on campaign experience rarely stands out

• Introductory coding courses carry less weight if there’s no portfolio or real project work

• Leadership or project management courses mean little without examples of leading teams or delivering outcomes

That said, online learning still has real value. It signals curiosity, initiative and commitment to self-development. The key is being intentional. Courses tend to have a stronger impact when they:

• align with a specific career path or role

• come from recognised institutions or industry bodies

• lead to practical outputs like projects, case studies or certifications that employers understand

• complement real work experience, internships or volunteering

Instead of collecting certificates, focus on building evidence of skill. One relevant course paired with a practical project often carries more weight than ten unrelated ones. Employers aren’t just looking for what you’ve learned. They’re looking for what you can apply, demonstrate and deliver.
