Based on the Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules issued on 14 October 2025, here are some key upcoming changes to visa rules that may impact international job seekers.

👉 Graduate Route to be reduced to 18 months

Change to 18 months will apply to applications submitted on or after 1 January 2027. PhD students will still be eligible for three years. We have explained it here in more detail.

👉 English language requirement to increase to B2

For Skilled Worker, High Potential Individual Visa and Scale Up routes, you are expected to write, read, speak and listen at B2 level in CEFR standard, which is equivalent to UK A Level and 5.5 - 6.5 in IELTS. This change will be applicable to those making their first application on a relevant route from 8th January 2026.

This new requirement may not impact many job applicants because if you are considering launching a career in the UK, you are expected to possess good English anyway to meet job responsibilities and duties.

👉 High Potential Individual (HPI) 

The list of ‘eligible institutions’ is to be increased to 100 from 50. However, the number is to be capped at 8,000 per year. You can learn more about this visa here.

👉 Students switching to Innovator Founder

Updated rules provide some flexibility for students’ self-employment in the context of applying for the Innovator Founder visa.

👉 Immigration Skills Surcharge

The immigration Skills Charge (ISS) is to rise by 32% on 16 December 2025. We also explained why this may impact some applicants here.
